McCauley
Sherri Lipman
McCauley, a fiber artist, brings her life experiences together in the creation
of her artwork. McCauley is educated as a teacher, trained as a programmer, and
has emerged as an artist, creating serendipitous fiber designs.
Watching her
mother sew clothing for her sister and self was a big part of her childhood.
For her ‘sweet sixteen’, she received a sewing machine. As the years went on,
she continued to stitch, making clothing to wear as a teenager. As an adult,
she picked up quilting and continued to create wearables.
After attending a
host of different technique classes, McCauley found her niche in the art cloth
community.
McCauley enjoys working extemporaneously and in the abstract. Bright
colors tend to excite her, as well as geometry and asymmetry. She typically
works in the moment, with paints and dyes on fabric, creating improvised
designs. The simple line of a geometric shape, the blast of a colorful line, or
the contrast of black against white makes her canvas sing.
McCauley likes to color outside the lines.
The serendipity of the paint landing on the fabric dictates the direction of
her initial design. Sometimes the impromptu line is enough to ground the
design. At other times, the challenge of incorporating a line of paint into a
cohesive design is the challenge that brings the piece together.
Her design work
often starts with black and white marks, with the addition of colors and shapes
to reflect emotions and events in her life. The color and shapes represent the
artist’s interaction with the world in which we live.
McCauley believes
in giving back to the art community, and because of this, she has donated her
time and artwork for fund raising causes to a variety of art organizations.
With many
experiences yet to encounter, many dyes and paints to explore, and many yards
of fabric to tangle with, McCauley hopes her abstract art provokes the viewer
and allows them to connect with the abstractions, finding delight in the view.
At this time,
McCauley works with art quilts, collage and surface design.
